Club for Growth Endorses Stenberg

The Club for Growth endorsed Nebraska Republican Treasurer Don Stenberg's Senate candidacy on Tuesday, further bolstering his underdog bid to upset frontrunning GOP Attorney General Jon Bruning.

"Don Stenberg is a lifelong champion of economic freedom and will be an ally for fiscal conservatives in Washington," said Club for Growth president Chris Chocola. "Don will fight to repeal ObamaCare and cut spending, and he'll oppose the bailout culture in Washington that is bankrupting America."

The growing chorus of national conservative support rallying to Stenberg's side is pain in the side of Bruning. Stenberg's fundraising was downright anemic for most of last year. But after landing the endorsement of Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., his fundraising pace picked up. At the end of 2011, he had $183,000 in the bank (though that is still well short of the $1.6 million in Bruning's account).

Stenberg still faces an uphill climb against Bruning, but the GOP race has clearly shifted, in recent months, from one pitting a very long-shot outsider against an establishment Republican into a contest in which more and more national conservatives are expressing confidence about Stenberg's chances.
