A Cardin spokeswoman told the Post the ads are simply a chance to take advantage of cheap airtime at a moment when voters are beginning to tune in. But it's hard not to notice the faces that appear in the ad -- the vast majority are African American. It's likely a case of over-caution, as Cardin remains popular in his state. A Washington Post poll conducted in early January showed 47 percent of registered voters approved of the job Cardin is doing while 20 percent disapproved.
