Senate Democrats Still Lobbying Kerrey To Run
Democratic sources said Monday that a Kerrey announcement was coming soon, but did not specify exactly when. Reid reportedly offered Kerrey the chance to retain the seniority he accrued during his two Senate terms if he runs and wins. That could cause angst in the Senate Democratic Caucus among members who would be leapfrogged and face a longer road to committee and subcommittee chairmanships. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., who similarly returned to win a Senate seat after retiring in 2001, noted he did not retain his seniority when he returned, despite having spent his own money to win a race Democrats had been trailing in before he entered. "I would assume [leadership] would maybe reconsider my situation," if they gave Kerrey seniority, Lautenberg said.
