It's all especially discouraging for national Republicans given that Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill is one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents, having to win in a state where President Obama has no shot this year. All that said, if the GOP nominates a mediocre or even subpar candidate to challenge McCaskill, they still have a good chance of victory. She's not popular at home, and voters will surely be reminded time and again of her use of a private plane for political purposes, a revelation from earlier this year that cuts against the grain of her good-government image.
