Charlie Gonzales Won't Seek Reelection

Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, D-Texas, right, speaks against President Bush's nomination of Miguel Estrada to a federal appeals court as Linda Chavez-Thompson, executive vice president of the AFL-CIO, left, looks on during a news conference on Capitol Hill Wednesday, March 5, 2003. Republicans are stressing Miguel Estrada's Hispanic heritage in the battle over his appointment to the federal appeals court, angling for political gain at the same time they seek votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster. "On behalf of the DCCC, I thank Charlie Gonzalez for his distinguished service in the House. This is a strong Democratic district and we look forward to electing a Democrat next November who will create jobs, protect the middle class and the Medicare guarantee for seniors rather than tax breaks for billionaires," said Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel in a statement. Meanwhile, former Democratic Rep. Ciro Rodriguez, who represented the 23rd District for two terms (and also previously represented the 28th District) until he was ousted in 2011 has en eye on the new 35th District, where Castro originally intended to run, the paper reported. "It's about having lived in this district almost my entire life," Rodriguez told the Express-News.
