"We learned that the tie between Obama and (Sen.) Joe Manchin was much too early in the campaign," said West Virginia GOP Chairman Mike Stuart, referring to the 2010 contest between Manchin and businessman John Raese in which both sides' tactics were similar what we are seeing now from Tomblin and Maloney. The push for independents is one reason why Maloney might not want to appear with Texas Gov. Rick Perry when the GOP presidential candidate appears in the state for a separate engagement later this week. "I don't know if I can be there or not," Maloney said last week regarding Perry's visit. "This is really an independent Perry visit," Stuart said. "This is a political event for a run for the presidency," he added, of Perry's scheduled Thursday visit for a private fundraiser.
