DuPree has emphasized his combination of public and private sector experience. On the campaign trail, Dupree has touted his record of job creation as the first black mayor of Hattiesburg, as well as his experience running his own real estate agency. If he wins the runoff, DuPree will be the first black gubernatorial nominee from a major political party in the state's history. Whoever ends up facing Bryant will have a very steep climb in a state where Democrats failed to even get a single candidate on the ballot for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, or auditor.
