Although some Democratic Insiders said they were "disappointed" that Trump would not be entering the Republican presidential fray and some Republican Insiders said they were just as "relieved" that he wasn't, most said they never thought his public dalliance was much more than an attempt to garner publicity for his TV show, "The Apprentice," during the May television ratings sweeps season or a way to feed his ego.
"He wanted PR, not the responsibility of governing," said one Democratic Insider. "To paraphrase what Marion Barry once said of a political rival, 'the Donald' don't want to run nothin' but his mouth." Echoed a Republican Insider, "This has never been anything but a ratings game for Trump."
But after Trump, Insiders in both parties reserved a healthy dose of umbrage for those in the media who gave him the attention he seemed to crave.
"Trump's 'run' for the White House was a P.T. Barnum 'there's-a-sucker-born-every-minute' moment for the national press corps," said one Democratic Insider. "It was cheap press for a TV program that should be on late night cable in between infomercials and wrestling. But at least 'professional' wrestling has people who actually climb into the ring." Added another, "The guy's a fraud and any political reporter that actually ever believed he was going to run should request a reassignment to entertainment news."
Republican Insiders were no less charitable. "Every journalist and editor who produced stories treating him as a serious candidate for President should be ashamed," said one GOP Insider.
"This was always a publicity stunt by a master at self promotion," noted another GOP Insider. "That it dominated the media for a fortnight said more about the press's celebrity obsession than anything else." But that Insider also added, "It was also perhaps a commentary on how weak the Republican field seems to be right now."
