The GOP's Secret Weapon In Kentucky

April 8, 2011
While some teammates transferred, Farmer and the other Unforgettables, along with coach Rick Pitino, rebuilt the disgraced program, culminating in an SEC title and a run to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight in 1992. (Side note: The Unforgettables fell just short of the Final Four thanks to what is widely considered the greatest shot in college basketball history. ) Candidates for lieutenant governor typically remain anonymous during campaigns, but if Williams' first ad is any indication, that won't be the case with this ticket. Since Farmer's playing days ended, the Kentucky native has built up an impressive political resume, having won statewide races in 2003 and 2007 by wide margins. With many handicappers expecting a tight race between Beshear and Williams, Republicans hope Farmer remains unforgettable for legions of Kentucky basketball fans when they head to the polls this year. UPDATE: As my colleague Sarah Mimms points out, there are even more (not-so-subtle) references to basketball in the ad. At its 25 second mark, what looks like a basketball swoops in and helps form the Williams-Farmer logo.
