McCarthy Aide Compares Members To "Hanoi Jane"

The original email doesn't make clear which specific member, if any, Meachum might be talking about, but there are several who fit the bill. Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) is contemplating running for governor. Reps. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.) are all either running for or considering running for Senate. And Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn) is signaling she may seek the presidency. All six have voted against previous continuing resolutions. In a statement, a McCarthy spokesperson said Meachum had made amends. "This was a regrettable decision made by one of our staff members, who sent an email acting independently and without the approval of the office or Congressman McCarthy," said Erica Elliott. "He realized it was a mistake and immediately apologized."
