Khazei Announces Mass. Senate Bid

Khazei ran in the Democratic Senate primary in 2009, eventually losing to Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley. He received 13 percent of the vote in the primary and finished third. He garnered more support than expected, gathering endorsements from the Boston Globe, Hyannis Cape Cod Times, and Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Khazei's fundraising committee was $190,000 in debt at the end of March, according to Federal Election Commission records. The Democratic race does not yet have a marquee name that can clear a primary field in advance of a general election showdown with Brown. The only other candidates currently in the Democratic primary race are immigration attorney Marisa DeFranco and former lt. gov. candidate Robert Massie. Other potential candidates looking at the race include Reps. Mike Capuano Stephen Lynch, and Newton Mayor Setti Warren.
