Almost 60 percent of the Democratic Political Insiders thought that Obama has the advantage, but many explained that was because the Republicans, lead by House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, have embraced venturesome reforms for Medicare. "The plot to kill Medicare means that Democrats will have home court advantage all through the 2012 election," said one Democratic Insider. "Thank you Representative Ryan." Added another, "one party is for Medicare, one party is not. I'll take Obama's position and double down."
Democratic Insiders also believed that the president's call for budget cuts as well as increasing taxes on the rich was a balanced plan that independents can embrace. "Obama is communicating with swing voters and the House Republicans are communicating to their base."
Republican Insiders, not surprisingly, had quite a different view and over 60 percent said that House Republicans held the upper hand in the budget debate. To them, the fact that Obama was trying to compete on their traditional turf, embracing more spending cuts, albeit reluctantly, was proof that the GOP was winning the debate. "President Obama had to come into the GOP sandbox on spending," said one Republican Insider. Another GOP Insider, noting that the president had been forced to up the ante on spending reductions when he laid out his revamped budget plan, joked that "Obama's first pitch was bounced six feet in front of the plate."
Republicans also thought that the next big battle in this year's budget war favored their party. "The debt ceiling [vote] gives them unprecedented leverage," predicted one GOP Insider.
