Insiders: Democrats Will Pay For Rising Gas Prices

April 21, 2011

Political Insiders in both parties concurred that the party that controls the presidency in the White House was the one that was going to shoulder disproportionate blame with the public. "If you're in the White House they are your gas prices," said one Democratic Insider. "The president sets policy and he will live or die by results," echoed a GOP Insider.

But the Insiders said there were additional factors that explained why the Democrats were particularly vulnerable on the issue. A number of Republican Insiders said that the Democrats' environmentalist sympathies and their opposition to the GOP's more robust policy of increasing domestic oil production was likely to tilt voters against the Democrats.

"The Democrats have no plan of action to immediately assuage voters' pain at the pump, whereas the Republicans can re-invoke 'drill baby, drill,'" said one GOP Insider, referring to the party's popular 2008 campaign chant. "Presidents own these problems and his intervention in Libya and opposition to off shore drilling create a compelling narrative," predicted another Republican. Even a few Democratic Insiders admitted that their party was vulnerable for its green impulse when gas prices were spiking.

Democrats worried that the rising gas prices were going to endanger the economy's rebound from the recession. "Obama needs a healthy recovery more and energy prices put pressure on the recovery and there are no easy quick fixes," said a Democratic Insider. Democrats also expressed some exasperation that despite the GOP's traditional ties to the oil industry, their party would be faulted if they failed to address the problem. "Should be the Republicans [who are blamed] because they are more tied to oil companies but if Democrats don't do anything" they will be blamed "because it seems like we don't get it," said one Democratic Insider.
