Dems Pick Charlotte for 2012 Convention

Democrats have picked Charlotte, N.C., as the site of their 2012 nominating convention.

The decision signals Pres. Obama's intention to compete on territory that is not traditionally Democratic. He won the state, 50 percent to 49 percent, against Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2008.

First Lady Michelle Obama announced the decision in an e-mail to supporters Wednesday.

"I am thrilled to make sure you are the first to hear some very exciting news," she wrote. "Charlotte, North Carolina, will host the 46th Democratic National Convention in 2012."

Obama also named the convention the "People's Convention" and said that there would be a focus on grassroots participation, an important part of Obama's 2008 campaign strategy.

"We will finance this convention differently than it's been done in the past, and we will make sure everyone feels closely tied in to what is happening in Charlotte," she wrote. "This will be a different convention, for a different time."
