The newly competitive electoral map that emerged with President Obama’s victory in 2008 is being put to the test in 2012. This year’s battleground encompasses 12 states, many of them put into play for the first time four years ago. How Obama and Republican Mitt Romney fare in November will help answer whether the new map was a fluke – the result of an outburst of discontent with a party and its nominee -- or perhaps a more permanent shift, rooted in demographics.
