National Journal's executive compensation survey -- our eighth since 1990 -- is based on figures reported on Form 990 filed with the IRS, or Form LM-2 filed with the Labor Department, by associations, professional societies, interest groups, think tanks, labor unions, and other nonprofits. The forms must be made available to the public upon request.

To be included in the survey, an organization has to be headquartered in Washington, suburban Maryland, or suburban Virginia, or have an operation in the D.C. area.

Because of filing deadlines and extensions, the data reflect compensation and benefits paid two years, and sometimes three years, before our publication date.
