SEFFNER, Fla. -- Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s 12-year-old daughter suffered a head injury in an accident in Miami on Saturday, prompting the lawmaker to leave Mitt Romney’s motorcade along a highway near here.
The senator's office said in a statement that while visiting with classmates in a private gated community, Amanda Rubio was a passenger on a golf cart involved in a collision. She was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition on Sunday afternoon.
"Her long-term prognosis is favorable," spokesman Alex Conant said. "The family is grateful for all the messages of support and the prayers said for their daughter."
Rubio was notified of the accident after coming off stage while campaigning with Romney in Kissimmee, Fla. He then headed to Miami after being notified shortly before 7 p.m.
Romney spokesman Rick Gorka said the freshman GOP senator took an earlier flight from Tampa to Miami than he had originally planned. Gorka said it would have taken more time to get that plane to the airport in Kissimmee, so he decided to stay in the motorcade and have him break off before it would turn onto Interstate 75.
