Second Debate Draws 65.6 Million Viewers

October 17, 2012

An estimated 65.6 million television viewers watched the second presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney, only a 2 percent drop from their first debate on Oct. 3 which drew 67.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

Tuesday's debate was shown on more than 12 different networks, with 10 of them showing it live while Univision and Telemundo broadcast it on tape delay.

There was a slight drop in all viewing categories for the second debate, with the biggest drop-off falling between the ages of 18 and 34, with 837,000 fewer viewers. However, Nielsen ratings do not take into account online streaming.

The second presidential debate in this political season netted 2.4 million more viewers than the second presidential debate 2008 between then-Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

The third and final debate between Obama and Romney will take place on Monday at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., and will be moderated by CBS' Bob Schieffer.
