Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator and onetime serious contender for the 2012 Republican nomination, will hold a campaign event for Mitt Romney on Saturday, his first official appearance for the candidate, according to ABC News.

Santorum will open the Romney campaign's Greensburg, Penn., office. Greensburg is part of the district Santorum represented while in the House, where he served before winning a Senate seat.

The former senator launched an independent group, Patriot Voices, last month to promote conservative causes and candidates.

Before today, there was limited contact between Santorum and the Romney camp.

In March, Santorum called Romney “the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama." Last month, he told CNN, “Well, I trust him more than I do Barack Obama.”
