Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum's presidential campaign spent more than it raised during the third quarter and is low on cash, according to figures released late Friday.

Santorum's campaign raised $704,199.37 and spent $743,757.29 between July 1 and Sept. 30, according to documents the campaign filed with the Federal Election Commission. The campaign has $189,556.94 in the bank as of Sept. 30 and is $71,866.19 in debt.

The numbers, while low, are an improvement for the campaign over the second quarter. Between April 1 and June 30, the campaign raised $585,525.19.

In a statement, Santorum's Communications Director Hogan Gidley admitted that not much fundraising has taken place.

"It's no secret that Rick hasn't been out there fundraising much," he said. "Instead, he's been focused on meeting voters, growing the grassroots base and pushing his conservative message in the early states."
