CAMPAIGN 2012

Santorum Cancels Monday Events to Stay With Hospitalized Daughter Bella

It's the second time the toddler has been hospitalized during Santorum's campaign.

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum says he will not hold campaign events on Monday in order to be at the hospital with his daughter, Bella.

"The entire Santorum family is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of prayers and support," spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement Saturday night.

This is the second time Bella, 3, has been hospitalized during Santorum's campaign. She was born with Trisomy 18, a chromosomal defect that usually causes severe physical and intellectual disabilities. Fewer than 10 percent of babies born with the condition survive their first year.

The statement about Bella came about 12 hours after Santorum's campaign released a schedule that showed no events for Monday. He has two stops planned for Tuesday and one each day for the rest of the week. Except for a Friday address to the National Rifle Association in St. Louis, all are in his home state of Pennsylvania, which holds an April 24 primary he has said he must win.
