Rick Santorum's support of Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter's 1996 presidential run has been used by his opponents to attack him as moderate. Now, Santorum is trying to cut his losses.
Speaking on ABC's This Week on Sunday, Santorum said his support for Specter, who ran on a pro-choice platform in 1996, "wasn't one of my prouder moments."
"I was his colleague in the United States Senate, he asked me to stand with him," Santorum said. "You work together as a team for the state of Pennsylvania," he added, citing Specter's support for Santorum's own senate bid in 1994.
And, in an attempt to distance himself from Specter, who switched to the Democratic Party in 2009 and blacked Obama's health care law, Santorum said that he "knew that Arlen Specter was going nowhere," and that his support for the candidate "was something I look back on and wish I hadn't have done."
