Ron Paul says he’s still in the race, and competitive enough to potentially win Maine, even though attention has focused on his rivals who are competing hard to win in Florida.
Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, the Texas Representative and GOP presidential hopeful said that after spending some time campaigning in Maine, he “was very encouraged.”
“The turnouts were fantastic—usually overflow crowds,” he said, pointing out that other candidates aren’t yet paying attention to the small state.
“I think that’s a real good place for us to break through,” he said.
Maine’s caucuses start on Feb. 4 and run through Feb. 11, and Paul said he hoped for a win that could generate some momentum.
Paul has expressed interest in gaining enough delegates to play a role at the GOP convention in August and perhaps influence the party’s platform. He did nothing to quell that notion on Sunday.
“If we have the delegates, which would be on the margin, somebody's going to be talking to us — and I have no idea how that conversation would go,” he said.
