CAMPAIGN 2012

Romney Wins Virginia

Networks project that Mitt Romney won the Virginia primary on Tuesday night, a victory that came easily because former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania failed to qualify for the ballot there.

With Romney and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, the only two major candidates on the ballot, the Virginia race was largely uncontested as candidates in recent weeks focused on Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia and Oklahoma.

Virginia’s 49 delegates are the fourth largest cache of any of the 10 Super Tuesday contests. Romney’s win there will help him bolster his already commanding lead in the delegate race.
