Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee raised about $40.1 million in April, almost matching President Obama's haul, the campaign reported on Thursday.
The Obama campaign -- and the Democratic committees that support it -- raised roughly $43.6 million in April.
Romney's total is even more impressive, The New York Times reports, because Romney and the RNC did not begin joint fundraising until April 14.
Romney's total dwarfs his March fundraising haul of $12.6 million, mainly due to Republicans uniting behind Romney and the fact that larger donations can be directed to the RNC, The Times reports.
Romney’s campaign reported $61.4 million cash on hand as of the end of April. The campaign says that 95 percent of the donations in April were $250 or less.
"We are pleased with the strong support we have received from Americans across the country who are looking for new leadership in the White House,” said Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick.
