Romney Attacks Obama Over GSA Scandal in New Web Ad

April 30, 2012

Mitt Romney's campaign released a new web ad on Monday that tries to pin the blame on the Obama administration for the spending scandal at the General Services Administration.

The minute-long ad, titled “Broken Promises: Spending,” runs video from then-Senator Obama in 2008 claiming he would “go through the federal budget line by line, eliminating programs that no longer work and making the ones we do need work better and cost less, because we cannot meet 21st  Century challenges with a 20th Century bureaucracy.”

The ad then runs text saying “What President Obama delivered,” followed by text that reads, “'Taxpayer Dollars Were Squandered' After GSA Officials Spent Nearly $1 Million For A Lavish Conference For Only 300 Attendees.” Romney has also tried to link Obama to the GSA scandal in the past.

The GSA has been accused of spending roughly $800,000 for a 2010 conference in Las Vegas. Congressional Republicans have attempted to link the White House to the scandal. A GSA employee told investigators that he notified the White House of his findings last year, but later clarified that he had “bumped into” a White House staffer working on GSA issues and mentioned the matter of the Inspector General’s investigation “in passing.”
