Rick Santorum Says Daughter Bella Expected to Leave Hospital on Wednesday

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said on Tuesday that his 3-year-old daughter Bella had experienced “a wonderful, miraculous recovery” from illness and would most likely leave the hospital on Wednesday.

Santorum took time off from the campaign trail this past weekend to be with Bella, who was born with a severe chromosomal disorder, when she was admitted to a Virginia hospital with pneumonia.

“I laid in the hospital bed with her all that night and, you know, when I get up in the morning and talked to the doctors and everything, they felt she was far past the crisis and she was on the mend and I can get back to work,” Santorum said in an interview on CNN shortly before addressing supporters in Las Vegas. Santorum decided to mostly bypass Florida's winner-take-all primary.

Santorum frequently mentions Bella on the stump as part of the reason he is anti-abortion. Asked by CNN’s Dana Bash whether it was hard to leave her side, Santorum, who has branded himself the socially conservative, family-values candidate, said: “Was it hard? Yes, it was very hard. But, you know, you're a mom, and you realize it's not easy to get up and go to work and leave, but, you know, that's the responsibility -- to provide, and in our case, to try to serve our country to make sure we have a country [where] little Bellas are respected and loved.”
