More billionaires have donated to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney than to any of his opponents' campaigns, including that of President Obama.
According to The Washington Post, 42 billionaires have donated to the Romney campaign, trailed by the 30 and 20 who have given to Obama and Texas Gov. Rick Perry respectively. Winning over big dollar donors may be a key to the 2012 race, after a 2010 change in campaign finance law legalized unlimited giving to “super PACs,” which sponsor ads for candidates.
Obama has still raised more than any of the Republican candidates combined, $157 million according to September’s FEC report. But Romney’s ability to win over donors like hedge-fund manager John Paulson may prove an advantage. According to Forbes, which lists America’s billionaires, Paulson is worth an estimated $16 billion. The Romney campaign did not respond to The Post’s request to comment.
