The Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee have set a fundraising goal of $800 million to defeat President Obama, The New York Times reports.

Through a joint fundraising committee called Romney Victory, the campaign hopes to bring in $500 million from big donors, and another $300 million from smaller donors. To make it an even $1 billion, the campaign also expects Romney-friendly super PACs and outside groups to spend another $200 million.

The fundraising goals were highlighted in a campaign memo to top donors, who can take advantage of special access to the former Massachusetts governor by contributing large sums. Republicans expect the president and his affiliated committees to raise $1 billion this election cycle.
