Rising Democratic star and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been selected as chairman of this year’s national convention, which opens Sept. 3 in Charlotte, N.C., the Los Angeles Times reports.

A formal announcement is scheduled for Wednesday in Washington, D.C. In the evening, Villaraigosa will join President Obama for a fundraiser in Los Angeles.

Considered one of the nation’s most prominent Latino elected officials, Villaraigosa has privately expressed interest in running for governor of California.
