QUICK TAKE: Santorum: Little Differentiates Gingrich, Romney

January 27, 2012

Coming off a night of strong attacks in Thursday's CNN debate in Florida, GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum said on FOX and Friends on Friday that little differentiates Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, and the two aren't all that different than President Obama, either.

Issues like Romney's tax returns and Gingrich's marital history are on the table, he said, because that’s all that contrasts the two front-runners.

“They’re back and forth on those issues because, on the big issues of the day, they don’t disagree that much,” Santorum said. "And they don’t disagree that much with President Obama."

Santorum attacked Romney’s defense of the government-mandated health care program he started in Massachusetts. Romney told Santorum during the debate that a state mandate was different from a federal mandate like the one Obama signed into law.

“That’s hooey!” said Santorum. “The bottom line is he’s for government control of health care, which is not a conservative principle. He does not differentiate himself from President Obama and that is going to be a big, big liability for us going into this general election."

Santorum said he would return home to Pennsylvania for 24 hours to gather his tax forms  to show the media. But his return home, he made sure to note, is not a retreat from the Florida primary nor the race for president.
