Campaign 2012

Poll: Romney at 35 Percent Support With Union Members

A nationwide Gallup poll shows that while 57 percent of union members support President Obama, fully 35 percent support Republican Mitt Romney.

The results mirror exit polls conducted in Wisconsin’s recall election last week, in which 62 percent of union households said they supported Democrat Tom Barrett, while a surprising 38 percent said they supported Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Government workers who are union members tend to support Obama at a higher rate of 59 percent, according to Gallup, while Romney polled at 34 percent among this contingent.

The results come from a daily tracking poll Gallup conducted from April 11-June 5, with a random sample of 13,376 employed registered voters, ages 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Roughly 12 percent of workers identified themselves as union members. The poll's margin was 4 percentage points.
