Mitt Romney has to win the GOP nomination before Paul Ryan, R-Wis., can even contemplate joining the Republican ticket, the House Budget Committee chairman said on Tuesday.

"I haven't given it enough thought to answer that question," Ryan said on the Today show when asked if he would be the party's pick for vice president. "It's never come up. The way I look at this is it's somebody else's decision. It's months from now. I'm busy trying to do my job in Congress."

Asked to confirm that the subject of his joining Romney's ticket has never come up, Ryan said: "He's gotta nail down the nomination first before we can start thinking about those things."

Ryan, popular in the Republican Party and among tea party members, endorsed Romney earlier this month in Wisconsin before the Massachusetts governor went on to win the state's primary.
