National Journal and CBS will host the first Republican presidential primary debate to air on broadcast television next month in South Carolina.
Ron Fournier, National Journal's editor-in-chief, and David Rhodes, president of CBS News, announced Tuesday that the debate will take place Nov. 12 at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.
The 90-minute debate will focus primarily on national security. It will begin at 8 p.m., and the first hour will be broadcast live on CBS. Remaining portions of the debate will be broadcast on NationalJournal.com, Face the Nation, and CBSNews.com.
National Journal congressional correspondent Major Garrett and CBS's Scott Pelley will moderate the debate.
Past debates have aired on cable outlets. "The first debate of the campaign on broadcast television will be on CBS," Rhodes said. "Scott Pelley and all of us at CBS News look forward to a spirited discussion of the issues with all of the Republican candidates."
By focusing on national security, the debate aims to "examine the critical questions of America's role in the world, now and in the future," Fournier said. "National Journal is proud to build on our 2012 election partnership with CBS News to give voters a thorough understanding of how each of the Republican candidates would take on these issues."
Partnering with the two news organizations to host the debate are the South Carolina Republican Party and Wofford College. "We look forward to the Nov. 12 debate on Wofford College's beautiful campus and continuing to demonstrate that in South Carolina, 'we pick presidents,' " said Chad Connelly, chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party.
National Journal is also cosponsoring a Jan. 23 presidential debate in Florida with NBC News.
