Gephardt: 'People Look at Politics Like They Hire a Plumber'

Former Democratic House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt doesn’t think Rick Santorum stands much of a chance at becoming the next president of the United States. And having failed to secure his own party’s nomination twice (in 1988 and again in 2004), he may be something of an expert.

“I think Rick can make a presentation in a fall campaign that would be able to win in a state like Missouri,” Gephardt said on CNN’s State of the Union. “Overall, I don’t think so… If the economy is still going forward, even at 40 miles an hour, 50 miles an hour, I think most people will stick with president Obama.”

And if the road metaphor didn’t do it for you, here’s Gephardt comparing the job of president to a plumber (and no, not “Joe the Plumber”).

“I think people look at politics like they hire a plumber,” he said. “I hire you to fix the bad pipe. If you fix it, I'll rehire you. If you don't fix it, I'm not going to rehire you.”
