David Axelrod: Romney ‘In a Time Warp’

David Axelrod on Tuesday attacked Mitt Romney for advocating the “failed” economic policies of the past decade, reflecting a sharpening rhetoric by the Obama campaign against the GOP frontrunner.

“I think he watches 'Mad Men' and thinks it's the evening news,” Obama's chief campaign strategist said on CBS’ This Morning, citing Romney's support for cutting taxes for the very wealthy and deregulating Wall Street. “He’s in a time warp.”

As the Republican Party begins to coalesce around Romney for the presidential nomination, Obama and his campaign have been preparing for the general-election fight by trying to portray Romney as an out-of-touch elite.

“He seems to be oblivious to the experiences of everyday people,” Axelrod said. “Romney seems to look at the world through a rear-view mirror.”

But the Romney team wasn't amused, responding with an attack on the president's economic record. "The challenges facing America today are too serious for President Obama and his team to be laughing about TV shows," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an email to National Journal. "If the White House spent more time worrying about the economy and less time worrying about Mitt Romney, maybe the country would be in better shape."
