A new $7 million ad campaign from Crossroads GPS, the issue advocacy arm of the Karl Rove-founded super PAC American Crossroads, accuses President Obama of “reckless spending.”
“Why isn't the economy stronger?” a narrator intones as a stopwatch ticks in the background. “In the seconds it takes to watch this, our national debt will increase by $1.4 million.” According to Crossroads, the U.S. government is “adding $4 billion in new debt every day.”
The screen then turns a gauzy red with yellow stars. “Borrowing from China for his spending,” says the narrator. “Every day, growing our debt faster than our economy.”
The 30-second ad is part of a $25 million effort from Crossroads in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The ads will begin airing on Tuesday and will run for two weeks.
In an unusual move, the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action responded to the ad in an email to National Journal: "In rushing to defend his candidate, Karl Rove has highlighted one of Governor Romney’s key weaknesses," senior strategist Bill Burton wrote, alleging that as governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney increased state debt by $2.6 billion.
