Chrysler CEO Refutes Romney's Jeep Claims

Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne contradicted Mitt Romney’s claims that Jeep’s production is being moved from the U.S. to China, calling any such suggestion “inaccurate.”

Although not naming the Republican nominee, Marchionne says in a letter published in the Detroit News that he felt “obliged to unambiguously restate” the company’s standing in the United States.


He cited several figures on the number of jobs Chrysler has added since 2009, saying the Jeep brand is now responsible for more than 9,300 hourly jobs, up more than 4,600 jobs in three years. Jeep has plans, Marchionne said, to add another 1,100 jobs in Toledo, Ohio, in the next year.

“Jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the United States and will constitute the backbone of the brand,” Marchionne said. “It is inaccurate to suggest anything different.”

This comes after the Romney campaign ran a television ad in Ohio that suggested that Jeep was moving assembly jobs to China because of President Obama’s policies.


PolitiFact has already given the ad a “Pants on Fire” rating and The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler gave the ad “Four Pinocchios.”

On the trail on Monday, both Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton attacked Romney’s claims, and Clinton even called it a “load of bull.” The Obama campaign also released its own ad, refuted the Romney ad.
