New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is planning to spend as much as $15 million of his own money in the final weeks of competitive congressional, state, and local races through a super PAC he is creating, reports The New York Times.

Bloomberg, who left the Republican Party to become an independent in 2007, plans to spend $10 million to $15 million in support of both Republican and Democratic candidates.

According to a statement posted on his website, Bloomberg intends to support candidates who are in favor of stricter gun laws, education reform, and same-sex marriage. As Daily Intel notes, Bloomberg has already backed Sens. Scott Brown, R-Mass., Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., this election cycle. He has also supported Rep. Robert Dold, R-Ill., Rep. Steve King's Democratic challenger Christine Vilsack in Iowa, and Rep. Jeff Flake's Democratic opponent in Arizona's Senate race, Richard Carmona.

Bloomberg plans to hold a fundraiser for independent Senate candidate Angus King later this month at his Manhattan home. Earlier this fall, Bloomberg gave $500,000 to the independent group Americans Elect in support of King.

New York City Deputy Mayor for Governmental Affairs Howard Wolfson will oversee the super PAC's election-related activities.
