SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Without revealing how much money she raised in the third quarter, Michele Bachmann hinted Thursday that her numbers may be lagging her past performance slightly – and some of her competitors significantly.
Speaking to reporters here, Bachmann emphasized the number of her contributors over the bottom line, saying that 92,000 people gave to her campaign. The average donation, she said, was $42.
“We are extremely delighted with the support that we've had,” Bachmann said. “It's very broad based and it's a huge amount of support."
Back-of-the-envelope math suggests Bachmann’s receipts for the period may be down over the second quarter, when she raised $4.2 million. By comparison, GOP presidential rival Rick Perry raised $17 million during the third quarter, and President Obama, fundraising in conjuction with the Democratic National Committee, pulled in $70 million.
Bachmann’s poll ratings have plummeted since Perry’s entrance into the race and her former campaign manager, Ed Rollins, has said it hurt her fundraising. Rollins has since left the campaign, along with several other senior staffers.
The Federal Election Commission will release third quarter filings of 2012 candidates for federal office this weekend.
