David Axelrod, chief strategist for the Obama campaign, will not appear on comedian Bill Maher’s show this week as Republicans and Democrats trade barbs over the role of partisan political entertainers like Maher and Rush Limbaugh, Politico reports.

Axelrod has been critical of Mitt Romney for failing to condemn Limbaugh after he called a Georgetown Law student a “slut” and a “prostitute” during the contraception debate, but at the same time was reportedly scheduled to appear on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. Maher, a left-leaning commentator who contributed $1 million to a pro-Obama super PAC, has recently come under fire by Republicans who were upset that he has made degrading remarks about prominent conservatives like Sarah Palin.

On Tuesday night, a spokesman for Obama’s campaign said Axelrod would not appear on the Maher show, according to Politico. No explanation was offered.
