Ad Spending Eases in Holiday Week

While Americans took a much-needed break to watch the fireworks this week, those watching television in critical presidential swing states got something of a breather from the constant barrage of campaign advertisements.

President Obama, Mitt Romney and their allies spent $11.4 million on advertising between July 3 and July 9, according to sources tracking presidential campaign spending. That's significantly less than the $30 million spent on campaign ads during the previous seven-day period, from June 26 to July 2.

Obama's campaign once again topped the field, spending $5.6 million across eight swing states. The campaign spent $1.5 million in Ohio, $900,000 in Florida and more than $700,000 each in North Carolina and Virginia.

 

Voters are seeing more Romney campaign advertisements than they have in the past as the Republican nominee continues to bulk up his campaign treasury. Romney and the Republican National Committee combined to raise more than $100 million over the last month; this week, Romney spent $4.5 million on television ads in seven swing states.

Romney spent most heavily in Florida, where he dropped $1.5 million in advertising. He spent more than $600,000 in Colorado, North Carolina and Ohio, according to the sources.

The two sides purchased the most ads in Colorado Springs, Orlando and Tampa, Florida, and Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia, according to figures first reported by NBC's First Read.

Most of Romney's outside allies aren't on the air this week, taking time off to replenish their own coffers and consider the landscape. Crossroads GPS and Restore Our Future, which have so far spent a combined $34 million on advertising, did not spend any cash over the last week. Voters in Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico and Wisconsin – four blue states Republicans hope to put in play this year – didn't see any presidential advertising this week.

Priorities USA Action, the pro-Obama super PAC, did spend money on ads this week, but at a much lower level than in previous seven-day periods. The PAC purchased a combined $1.2 million in advertising in Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

All told, the two sides have spent more than $187 million on television advertising across 13 swing states. Obama and his allies have spent $109.9 million, while Romney and the conservative groups have doled out $77.4 million. Most of that money – $97 million – has been spent in just three states: Florida ($34.6 million), Ohio ($38.5 million) and Virginia ($24.7 million).
