Tweeting the DNC: A Big Spike for Obama

Convention-related Twitter chatter spiked last night as President Obama concluded his remarks on the closing night of the Democratic National Convention, according to data supplied by Twitter.

At 11:04 p.m., as Obama wrapped up his speech, 52,757 tweets with the hashtag #DNC2012 were posted. That number is more than 3.5 times the peak of 14,355 tweets following Romney's speech last week.

President Obama enjoyed another spike—of 43,646 tweets—at 10:59 p.m., around when he said "times have changed since I first spoke to this convention. The times have changed, and so have I. I’m no longer just a candidate. I’m the President."

Activity also bumped around when the President promised he would "never turn Medicare into a voucher," with 39,863 tweets posted at 10:50 p.m.

And 37,694 tweets were posted at 10:52 p.m., as Obama defended his party's pro-government positions. "We don’t think that the government is the source of all our problems, any more than are welfare recipients, or corporations, or unions, or immigrants, or gays, or any other group we’re told to blame for our troubles," he said.
