President Obama’s campaign manager told the Democratic National Convention on Thursday that the campaign has registered more than 1 million new voters, topping the impressive effort of 2008, when a flood of new and mainly young voters helped propel Obama to victory.

“Our volunteers have made 44 million calls and knocked on 3.8 million doors. We’ve registered more than a million voters — already more than in 2008. And no state has registered more people than the great, blue state of North Carolina!” said campaign manager Jim Messina in a shout-out to the hometown audience in Charlotte.

“We’re doing exactly what the Republicans don’t want: getting more people involved in our democracy,” Messina said in brief remarks at the podium on Thursday evening.

Messina recently told The Huffington Post that his goal is to beat all benchmarks of four years ago. Commenting on the technological innovations that the campaign could bring to voter turnout efforts, Messina told the website, “This is light-years ahead of where we were in 2008. We are going to make 2008, on the ground, look like Jurassic Park.”

Obama is counting on his ground operation to make up for Republican challenger Mitt Romney’s superior fundraising.
