Liberal Group Attacks GOP on Disaster Relief

With ill weather looming over the Republican National Convention, a liberal advocacy group is attacking the GOP for its emergency disaster-relief funding policies.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee launched online ads in Florida on Monday morning that read, “Republicans voted against disaster relief. Thank them here" -- with a link to the group's website.

The ad features House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla, and Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., Mitt Romney's running mate. Those who click are taken to boldprogressives.org and asked to sign the organization’s petition against Republican policies and “join the fight to hold Republican's accountable for their disaster relief cuts,” according to Neil Sroka, the group's press secretary.

"This week, Republicans will 'ensure the delegations housed in storm-impacted areas have alternative housing if needed.' Republican politicians give themselves extra safety from the storm, but consistently leave Florida out in the cold. Thanks a lot, Republicans," the ad reads.

A House Republican effort last year opposed approval of emergency disaster relief funds without matching spending offsets.

Sroka declined to say how much money was behind the ad campaign, but called it “saturation-level.”
